Paula as a Tango Coach I am a certified Life coach and the core of my work is directed to the industry of the Argentine tango. Having been there and walked the path, I am driven to bring positive change in people's lives and assist them with their Tango journey, offering a safe and non judgmental space that promotes discovery, concrete goal setting and personal achievement .
What is Tango Coaching? There are different approaches about the concept of Tango Coaching. In the way that I work with my clients, TC refers to the work between coach and client/tango dancer, in order to bring the latter awareness and insight over the current situation, ongoing struggles and future goals, by utilising a series of techniques that target the individual's personal needs.
How is the Tango teacher different from the tango coach? For me personally, as a certified Life Coach, being a Tango Coach means more then just being a teacher or a mentor, although these are undoubtedly great skills to have. I believe that the work of a coach, when done properly, promotes long term change and transformation, in a completely different way that a teacher does. Let me explain you how: A teacher promotes understanding via sharing achieved knowledge that is associated with a particular subject, providing information, at times instructs the student "how to". A life coach accesses a person's deeply formed operating systems and brings awareness and accountability towards change and personal transformation. Think of the quote “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day.If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime. Now, you can apply this to Tango context by replacing the word "fish" withincreased personal awareness and insight, as well as developing systems in order to become more resourceful and confident dancer.
How can Tango Coaching benefit me? The tango path is a wonderful one, but without the proper guidance, the journey can feel daunting and difficult. As a teacher, I have realised that regular lessons can only fix certain problems and that in some cases, a different sort of help is needed. I have repeatedly witnessed dancers and students feeling stuck and helpless, disconnected, generally dissatisfied with their dancing and unable to experience forward motion. A lot of the time, these problems have very little to do with the the dance experience itself. Having in consideration that the results will depend on how much effort and work the individual will do, here are some issues Tango Coaching may help with:
Improving confidence on the dance floor
Easing Tango related anxiety and stress
Clarifying current goals and direction
Overcoming cultural differences
Improving Performance skills
Becoming a better dancer
overcoming frustrations
Improving self-esteem
Improving self-image
Easing social anxiety
Feeling better
If you feel scared to do it... I understand. Let me tell you that you are not alone. Opening yourself up can open up certain vulnerabilities. Let me reassure you that my Tango coaching sessions offer a safe and non judgmental environment where confidentiality is agreed between both parties. In the work together we only go as deep as YOU want to go. We work as a team, in order to achieve YOUR goals, at YOUR own tempo at ALL times.
My story. "Having walked the Tango path for two decades and undergone some very difficult challenges myself, I have experienced first hand, how my emotional, physical and mental limitations have created blocks that got in the way of my progress as a Tango dancer. Many times, I have felt discouraged, lost and alone and did not know who I could confide with and who I could trust. This interesting industry is not for the faint of heart. Many times, it took a real inner fight to squeeze out all the determination I had in me in order to keep going, pushing through the major set backs and moments of self-doubt. I had to become my own coach and so I did. I researched, read, exercised, studied and looked for inspiration everywhere I could. I arrived to the conclusion that all is takes for anyone to progress trough adversity, is to realise that there is a sequence of small steps and decisions available for them anytime they want to, steps that lead to the changes that can bring them closer to their goals and personal success.
